Running Horizon on Windows 7 / SQL Server 2008

Some Notes for libraries planning to run Horizon on Windows 7 and migrating to SQL Server 2008

Latest update from SirsiDynix on the subject of running Horizon on Windows 7.

Horizon 7.5A (released May 2010) is the only release of Horizon that is certified on Windows 7.

7.5.1 will also be certified, but will not be released until end of this year or early 2011.

Some sites have successfully run 7.4.2 on Windows 7, however not all sites are successful, and some run into major problems.  We don't advise running in this environment, as there are multiple things that can go wrong, and none of them are easy to fix and it is not supported.  The recommendation is to upgrade to 7.5A if the site wants to run on Windows 7.

In order to run Horizon 7.5 the database must be migrated to SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft are ending support for SQL Server 2000 and encouraging customers to move to the current databse SQL Server 2008.

SirsiDynix have certified Horizon, with release 7.5, to operate on SQL Server 2008 but not SQL Server 2005.

Your I.T. Section may have plans to install and license SQL Server 2008 for other applications that are operating in the Local Authority. The library may be covered by this license, please check with your I.T. section. Migrating the Horizon database to SQL Server 2008 is a chargeable task, 1 days services at our usual rates.

For libraries that are operating Horizon on a Sybase database they will need to migrate to a SQL Server 2008 platform. If the Local Authority does not have a license for SQL Server 2008 that can accommodate the library, there will be a cost for a SQL Server 20008 license.

The upgrade to release 7.5 is covered under the annual Horizon maintenance.

Interleaf Technology plan to migrate all sites to SQL Server 2008 over the next 12 months.
