Having spent a number of months stocking its new "virtual branch" with downloadable audio books and other electronic media, and customising the interface, the system quietly went live a few weeks ago. The system has already notched up over 850 issues.
Digital lending enables libraries to offer their members thousands of digital audiobook, ebook, music and video titles from a range of authors, publishers and film directors. Members can browse the collection and download digital media anytime, anywhere, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the DLRCOCO library website.
To use this service, members will need a library card, a library PIN number and a home computer with an Internet connection. Once a title is downloaded it can be enjoyed on the computer or transferred to a supported device, such as an MP3 player. Many audio titles can also be burned to CD. When the loan period expires on the computer, the titles are automatically returned to the collection.
